Diagnostic parameters and reliability of four rapid immunochromatographic tests for dengue 4 BJID
Mata,Veronica Elizabeth; Passos,Sonia Regina Lambert; Santos,Maria Angelica Borges dos; Buonora,Sibelle Nogueira; de Andrade,Carlos Augusto Ferreira; Lima,Monique da Rocha Queiroz; Costa,Betina Moreira; Hökerberg,Yara Hahr Marques.
ABSTRACT Background: Although performance of rapid immunochromatographic tests (RITs) for dengue virus (DENV) serotypes 1, 2 and 3 is relatively settled, evidence on accuracy of RITs for DENV-4 are based on studies with small sample sizes and with discrepant results. Objectives: To assess accuracy and inter-observer agreement of RITs targeting dengue nonstructural protein-1 (NS1) antigen - Dengue NS1-Bioeasy™, Dengue NS1 Ag Strip-Bio-Rad™, IVB Dengue Ag NS1-Orangelife™ and Dengue NS1-K130-Bioclin™ in DENV-4 samples. Methods: Study sample (n = 324) included adults presenting at an emergency unit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with fever of ≤72 h and two or more dengue symptoms. A serum sample from each patient was tested by each RIT. A positive...

Evaluation of the performance of the modified direct agglutination test (MAT) for detection of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in dogs Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Cañón Franco,William Alberto; Bergamaschi,Denise Pimentel; Richtzenhain,Leonardo José; Nogueira,Yeda; Camargo,Luís Marcelo Aranha; Souza,Silvio Luís Pereira de; Gennari,Solange Maria.
Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis that has been the subject of study in Brazil and worldwide. The dogs are sentinels for the infection and can carry Toxoplasma gondii in the environment. Seroepidemiological surveys of these animals are an important tool in the surveillance and control of the disease and inform decision-making in health programs. In this study the performance of the Modified Agglutination Test (MAT) in the serodiagnosis of canine toxoplasmosis is evaluated and compared to the indirect immunofluorescent-antibody test (IFAT). A sample of 157 dog sera from the county of Monte Negro, Rondônia, with 76.40% positive reactions for Toxoplasma gondii (IFAT =16) was analyzed using the MAT (=25), presenting sensitivity of 85.00% (Confidence Interval 95.00%:...

Predictive model for the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusion BJID
Neves,Denise Duprat; Dias,Ricardo Marques; Cunha,Antônio José Ledo A. da.
This study developed a predictive model to identify pleural tuberculosis. A consecutive cases study of patients investigating the cause of pleural effusion, in an area of high prevalence of tuberculosis (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Clinical and laboratory variables were compared among patients with tuberculosis (TB) and without tuberculosis (NTB), individually and using logistic regression. The performance was described as diagnostic accuracy, compared to a gold standard in a masked way. We have studied 104 TB patients, 41 with malignant, 29 transudates, 28 parapneumonic, 13 with miscellaneous diseases. After identification of individual discrimination power aided by clinical, radiological and laboratory variables, the following ones were included in a...
